Listening to a two-person band for the first time can be challenging; an inevitable doubt rises regarding the group’s ability to deliver like larger bands. But that expectation only makes discovering Dots Will Echo better. The duo avoids the obvious pitfalls of small groups, producing plenty of music per capita and bringing enough creativity to the table to hook even a skeptical listener. With their latest effort, Drunk is the New Sober / Stupid is the New Dumb, out now on Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label, Dots Will Echo reinforces their ability to produce as a duo with an album full of fun and feeling.
It’s always enjoyable to listen to a band when you can tell they have a good time, and Dots Will Echo certainly sound like they had fun with Drunk is the New Sober / Stupid is the New Dumb. The style of the album is a pointedly sloppy, an aesthetic that invokes images of recording sessions that were low-key, friendly jam sessions. The interludes sprinkled throughout the album enhance this feeling, giving the listener a window into what sounds like a casual afternoon in the studio. Dots Will Echo’s playful attitude is infectious.
In addition to their undeniably lighthearted style, Dots Will Echo entertains with lyrics that are equally playful and goofy. Even if you’re not smiling after a few jangling, off kilter pop tunes at the beginning of the record, you will surely crack a grin when listening to Dots Will Echo sing merrily about a shitstorm coming our way in “Shitstorm.” With their effortless style and eyebrow-raising lyrics, Dots Will Echo entertains on multiple levels.
It would be a mistake to think that Dots Will Echo is so one-dimensional that they can’t also spit out some more serious songs. In fact, the band makes a quick turn around after the amusing “Shitstorm,” with the next song being the heartfelt (but still catchy) “Be a Friend. ” Dots Will Echo is a band that can do it all, and this point is supported by the juxtaposition of a goofy, growly song like “Shitstorm” with a slower, more deliberate song.
Dots Will Echo packs a solid musical punch, and that they’re a duo only makes their accomplishment more impressive. With Drunk is the New Sober / Stupid is the New Dumb, Dots Will Echo has an easy-going summer album that’s not afraid of getting serious here and there, and that’s something that any band should be proud of.
