Marnie Stern possesses a reputation as a serious guitar player who can shred with the best of them and who creates songs that are densely layered barrages of sound. However, the first single “Year of the Glad” from her forthcoming album Chronicles of Marnia reveals that she will be peeling back some of those sonic layers. The track makes use of vocal loops and still employs spastic guitars and frenetic drums. However, the less cluttered mix reveals these individual parts more clearly than before. While purists may bemoan this shift, I’m liking this new approach. “Year of the Glad” is a solid and powerful first statement from the forthcoming Chronicles of Marnia, due out on Kill Rock Stars on March 19th.
