With a little under a month until the release of their album Anxiety, Autre Ne Veut has unveiled the second single from the record. “Play by Play” emerges as an ambitious electronic R&B opus. A statement from the band’s publicist calls the song “a 21st Century pop operetta about jealousy, paranoia and holding on to the things you love too tightly.” This thing has Prince written all over it, but it’s also far too contemporarily rendered to be called derivative. The song begins with a crescendoing digital intro, breaks down to a pulsing rhythm at 1:45 and explodes to full realization around the 3-minute mark as singer Arthur Ashin repetitively belts out “I just called you up to get that play by play” in a sentimental falsetto surrounded by layers of sound. This shit is real.
