“Berlin Lovers,” the first track to surface from the sophomore album by Sub Pop band Still Corners, employs an equilibrium of foreground 80s sythns and a softer, higher backdrop of a minimal whine. Tessa Murray sings in a breathy but clear voice touched with reverb as simple snare holds the song together. Shot from a view over the hood, the photograph that accompanies the song features the duo sitting in a darkened, vintage (circa late 70s) maroon town car. The image and the song both recall the audio/visual themes from the recent cult success Drive, which I see as a very good thing. The band’s album Strange Pleasures will be out May 7th on Sub Pop.
