Track Review: Chain & the Gang – “Surprise Party”

Ian Svenonius’ (of Weird War and The Make-Up) newest full-time project, Chain & the Gang, is set to release a new album, In Cool Blood, on July 10 via K Records. K describes the first single “Surprise Party” as “maybe the best song in the whole world,” which may be an ambitious claim, but we’ll readily admit we’ve given this 70s-NYC-tough track more than a couple listens. Chain & the Gang’s song can be described as a Television-Personalities-inspired-garage-rock-feel-good-summer-song. “Surprise Party” features a simplistic drum rhythm, a no-frills, plodding guitar, and Svenonius’ voice at the forefront coolly talking out lyrics, while fellow band-member Katie Alice Greer provides back-up vocals during the chorus (which happens to be “surprise party!”). Svenonius is a well-respected member of the punk scene in Washington, DC and has released over 15 albums during his long career. We’re excited to see what Chain & the Gang has in store when the new album drops.
