The new single “Underground” from the Olympia noise trio Broken Water comes to us a little over a week before the release of, Tempest their third effort, and first for Seattle’s Hardly Art label. Read more about the band’s album and tour here. The track is vastly divergent from the first single in many ways, primarily, a result of switching to a male singer. I feel as trite writing it as you do reading it, but the influence of Pacific Northwest legends Nirvana heard in singer Jon Hanna’s vocals doesn’t sound trite at all, and that’s a good thing. The track is all crunchy distorted guitar and even-keel, growly vocals that give erupts into a swirling tornado of guitar and drums half way through. Epic. A rowdy three-piece from Olympia that alternates male and female on vocals and goes by only their first names—will Beat Happening’s influence ever die? We hope not.
