Album Review: Polysick – Under Construction

polysick-under-constructionArriving this week via 100% Silk, the four-track EP Under Construction from Rome-based producer Polysick grooves with all the strange fervor gleaned from its Chicago and Detriot acid-house roots. The snare-kick duo in the intro of “Whatever” might be your typical torso-jerk beat, but as soon as the squelchy peals of robot-speak intrude, we are transported to the realm of the lysergic and formless, sliding into undulating subterranean grooves where sour, bubbling textures reign supreme. “Shattered” is a disorganized motley amalgam of funky synths and sounds, out of which an order slowly emerges, though no real hook or melody develops as the listener is tossed about a cacophony of misconstrued mania. The most stylistically-intriguing of the group, “3 Cents” combines acid-house with a bluesy funk feel for its untiring seven-minute groove. “Barry Talks” lends its subdued, lethargic stupor and funky-synth talk sounds to an old-baritone radio-voice which ruminates on the detriments of some past gang-minded youth. Certainly admirers of acid-house will find this EP, full of bold, strange sounds, well worth the listen
