Track Review: “Sirena” – Tara Jane O’Neil

Tara Jane O’Neil’s first solo material since 2009 comes on the K imprint in the form of a 7” single in the International Pop Underground series. The A side, “Sirena,” a tribute to a Spanish folktale, floats by like an underwater dream. The chords are strummed slowly, with delicacy, on top of the steady, brushed tick of the drums. O’Neil’s voice drifts gently, entwining with layered harmonies. The chord change and strummed guitar build into the chorus are ever so slight but perfectly achieved, and the distorted but understated interlude is right on. The song is simply, blissfully serene. The B-side is O’Neil’s soft, meandering cover of Kermit the Frog classic “Rainbow Connection.” The song has been covered by a vast array of artists over the years, and it fares well in O’Neil’s hands—a dreamy, hopeful song that perfectly complements “Sirena.”
