The group’s new album, <em>Influence</em>, officially drops today, and Pageantry will celebrate with a show at Austin’s best venue, Cheer Up Charlies, supported by a killer bill of bands. Come early for Lomelda, stay for performances by Pageantry, Borrisokane, The Birthday Club, and Good Field. It’s an incredible slate of artists; see you there! Parker</p> </div> <p>In 2003, two years after I moved to Austin, when SXSW was a much smaller affair and Emo’s still occupied real estate on Red River, a Seattle based indie label called Barsuk held a day party at the esteemed venue during the March festival. On the bill were The Long Winters, Andrew Kinney of the American Analog Set, Quasi, Britt Daniel of Spoon, Jesse Sykes, Zykos, Western Keys, Pinback, and headliners Death Cab for Cutie. I was a huge fan of many of these bands and made sure to arrive at the party when doors opened at noon. I was the first one there, and I dutifully watched every band from near the stage. Death Cab, having already begun their ascent into stardom, eventually ensured that the room filled completely before their set. Being sweaty and exhausted didn’t stop me from staying front and center, elbows rested on the wooden stage. When Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard emerged I remember clearly being enamored with his all-black Converse, which were about eye-level for me. They were so cool. Everyone wore the traditional black and white Chuck Taylor’s, but I’d never seen the all-black versions. Parker</p> </div> <p>This SXSW, as with several before, Converse is bringing their recording studio, Converse Rubber Tracks, to Austin. Or more accurately, they’re bringing the <em>spirit</em> of their recording studio to Austin. After welcoming bands to submit their music for consideration, Converse chose twenty Texas bands to record in two Austin studios (Big Orange and Shine Studios, both in East Austin) at no cost. On the day I visited the studios, Denton rock band Birds of Night had just finished tracking a song. Parker</p> </div> <p>However, the bands aren’t limited to recording, as artists are allowed to use the studio time however they desire. In the case of Austin band Good Field, the indie pop quartet was able to master their new album. Rather than requiring bands to make a song that can then be plugged by Converse, the company truly affords artists an opportunity to make the time beneficial. “To be able to get a song recorded and/or mixed or mastered really does help,” says Good Field keyboardist Kyle Robertson. Drummer Esteban Cruz adds, “A lot of people record themselves, which is what we’ve been doing for a long time. Parker</p> </div> <p>Good Field was able not only to master their album but to use an engineer they knew, Justin Douglas. Douglas owns Shine Studios and has worked with the Rubber Tracks program for several years and says that the program is “well thought out and really well done,” before adding, “and I’m not saying that for the shoes.” The silent thinker of the band, bassist Michael McCleod eloquently says, “I just want to say thanks to Converse, because it is really special that they offer the opportunity to work on what the band sees fit and what would best help them, so rather than us working up a song, we have our minds wrapped around finishing an album. I think it’s an immense gift to be able to pump out this recording during South By. Parker</p> </div> <p>Unmistakably, the Converse Rubber Tracks program helps to promote Converse’s brand and reputation–there’s an element of advertising. But it’s also a refreshing perspective on the potential for relationships between artists and companies. Rubber Tracks clearly goes beyond advertising and product placement. Rather than <a href="http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/03/05/battle-of-bands-and-brands-rolls-on-at-south-by-southwest/?_r=0" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">cramming their product down artists’ throats while showing off for the public</span></a> (ahem, McDonald’s we’re looking in your direction), Converse gives artists something valuable and precious and lets them have complete control. You won’t find a horde of people watching the bands record; the program has little to do with public posturing and everything to do with genuinely fostering good will with artists. Rather than exploiting artists, the program equally considers the company and the bands with whom they work. Those who know me can confirm you’d have a difficult task finding someone more critical of the seedy deeds of corporate entities, but Converse has impressed me by bolstering the careers of almost two dozen Texas bands. Which is why I’m always shocked by the fact that festivals feel a little empty early in the day. Here’s your chance! The music is great, and you don’t have to deal with the hassle of headliner-sized crowds. This is the <em>best part</em> of the fest! In the spirit of my love for up-and-coming and lesser-known bands, here is a list of six bands playing early in the day that you just might miss if you’re not paying attention.</p> <p>1. Spider Bags – Friday – 12:15 – Orange Stage</p> <p>Garage rock with a lot of distortion and a lot of heart. Due in part to its radio connections, the series’ has the ability to spotlight bands on the cusp of national recognition, propelling them forward, while sharing that buzz with smaller local acts. The stage has been given a beautiful, arcing wooden roof along with a phenomenal lighting rig, and a large new bar and patio area has been constructed at the back of the outdoor area. It feels distinctly like a miniature version of Stubb’s. Frontwoman Asli Omar addressed this fact directly during the band’s set and said what I had been thinking all night. “We play in Austin more than we do in Houston,” she said, continuing to tell the crowd how much The Tontons love Austin and thanking us for accepting them as one of our own. “We’re all from Texas anyway,” she concluded, “and that’s what’s important, right?” Her earnest address brought cheers from the crowd.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/The_Tontons_at_Scoot_Inn-12.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-13202" alt="The_Tontons_at_Scoot_Inn-12" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/The_Tontons_at_Scoot_Inn-12-150x150.jpg" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/The_Tontons_at_Scoot_Inn-12-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/The_Tontons_at_Scoot_Inn-12-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/The_Tontons_at_Scoot_Inn-12-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>The Tontons do feel a like a local band, and what’s great for Austin is that they keep getting better and better. Asli Omar’s voice and energetic stage antics have been a strong point of the band’s live show for a while now and remains so, but the rest of the band has been picking up their live show in recent performances. The Tontons just have that effect on people. They’re a band that’s endlessly fun to listen to and to watch. Songs throughout the night moved from upbeat indie pop to slow, grooving soul and included many of the tracks featured on their recently released full-length <i>Make Out King & Other Stories of Love—</i>“Magic Hour” as well as standouts “Bones 1” and “Bones 2.” We’ve been saying for about a year now that this band is going to see the upper echelons of popularity, and it has been happening, slowly. Their LP has seen some national press, and doors keep opening for the Houston four-piece. See them now and as often as possible before your only option is television appearances or buying scalped tickets for sold out shows.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Speak-6.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-13188" alt="Speak-6" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Speak-6-150x150.jpg" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Speak-6-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Speak-6-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Speak-6-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>SPEAK offered direct support for The Tontons with a set of slick pop music. I’ve heard a ton about the band, but this was my first time seeing them live. The five-piece with Paul Price at the helm has begun to work on new material, and the current set features some unreleased tunes such as “Hospital Bed” and “Future Me,” as well as older crowd favorites like “These Dreams.” We’re huge fans of Good Field and can’t wait to see what the future holds for the band and their next released material.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Slomo_Drags_at_Scoot_Inn-3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-13179" alt="Slomo_Drags_at_Scoot_Inn-3" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Slomo_Drags_at_Scoot_Inn-3-150x150.jpg" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Slomo_Drags_at_Scoot_Inn-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Slomo_Drags_at_Scoot_Inn-3-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Slomo_Drags_at_Scoot_Inn-3-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Slomo Drags opened the night with a set of guitar-driven indie rock built on twinkling and distorted notes and solid percussion. The band possesses a great balance between sheen and grit. The set left me sufficiently impressed after the first time seeing them, and I expect that Austin will be seeing more of them in the near future.</p> <p>Accolades are in order to all the players involved in the night’s show—each of the high quality bands that played as well as Scoot Inn and show organizer 101X Homegrown Live. Austin is lucky to have all of these forces at work individually, but it’s a staggering achievement when they convene to function cooperatively. On Saturday night, Houston’s indie pop darlings The Tontons will headline a 101X Homegrown bill that also includes our local faves Good Field as well as Casual Strangers, SPEAK, and Slomo Drag. The Tontons, with frontwoman Asli Omar at the helm, deliver soulful indie rock that alternates between heavy grooves and upbeat pop tunes. Tickets are only $10 at the door–an incredible deal for a five-band bill on Saturday night. Abram Shook’s outstanding album <em>Sun Marquee</em> dropped this month. I can think of no words to describe my own mental state during the performance other than total amazement. Impeccable live arrangements and raw energy defined the set, as the crowd cheered enthusiastically after each song. Multi-instrumentalist and beautiful vocalist Karla Manzur joined Shook onstage for two particularly wonderful songs. Indeed, Shook seemed surrounded by an abundance of friends and love on Friday. While it may be true that this is often the case when a musician celebrates the release of an album, it seemed especially true for Shook; although that love is not explicitly related to the music, it both shed light on the music Shook creates as well as drew me into a fervent affection for the songwriter. The cast of Michael McLeod (bass), Kyle Robertson (keys), Esteban Cruz (drums), and Paul Price (guitar & vocals) represents one of Austin’s most solid outfits. Each member brings an incredible talent to the band to crate outstanding indie pop. McLeod indicated to me before the show that the band had been sharpening new material and tracking some in their makeshift home studio–an exciting prospect. Capable of handling the headlining spot on their own, the experimental, synth-pop band kicked off the evening with a tight set of songs culled from their incredible 2013 effort <em>Spillway</em>. Their album emerged as one of the best in Austin last year and the band’s live set showcases dextrous sonic texture and infectious melodies. Royal Forest include the artful touch of moving seamlessly from one song into the next as they join with suspended notes and synth-driven loops.</p> <p>One thing about Friday’s bill is clear: if you missed it, you did yourself a disservice. It felt like it had been too long since we’d seen the band, so it was great to catch them at a completely packed Lambert’s last Friday at a show sponsored by local blog Ovrld. One of the greatest pleasures of watching Good Field lies in how the band creates songs so effortlessly. The arrangements are well-balanced and subtly terrific as sound apparently emanates naturally from each member’s instrument with ease. The sold out Lambert’s completely loved Good Field Friday night as crowds always do. We listen to their self-titled, debut LP constantly and had the band play our SXSW day showcase for the most recent installment of SXSW. “These Dreams” is one of the bands most well-crafted songs, a perfect blend of flowing melodies and buzzing guitars under urgent vocals proved by frontman Paul Price. With all this in mind, we’re excited that we can share with you the band’s video for “These Dreams,” directed by Karinne Berstis. Fittingly, the video is an odd and mysterious journey through a shadowy dreamworld. EP lead track “The Road We Travelled Down” emerged as a high point in the set with excellent slide work provided by Price. “We Both Know,” the EP’s closer, offered another strong showing as did a new song, “Alexis,” on which the band sounds more full and Baczynski opens up the drums as Horn’s vocal melody intertwines nicely with Price’s guitar notes. Price behind Horn was one example of this, as well as Michael McLeod of Good Field who plays guitar in Grace Park’s band. McLeod also recently played bass in Dana Falconberry’s band for a <a title="Dana Falconberry and Buxton at Stubb’s Live Review" href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/2013/04/08/dana-falconberry-and-buxton-at-stubbs-live-review/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">show at Stubb’s</span></a>. On Saturday night, with a full band, Park sounded better than ever, incorporating upbeat jazz elements to the night with standing bass. Another encouraging perk was seeing capable female artists fronting these bands. Fludily moving from behind his guitar to dancing as he stands alone with a microphone, occasionally tweaking knobs on a mixer, Lukens kept the crowd on their toes. Perhaps most importantly, Lukens is the kind of performer that will push his audience, which is a desperately needed quality in live music. One of his more straightforward songs, “Dear Someone,” sounded particularly full and robust since Lukens has added a more complete band to his live show in recent months. Each member of Good Field delivers something vital to the band’s sound whether it’s the careful bass lines of Michael McLeod, the smooth vocals of Paul Price, Kyle Stevens’ hazy synths, or the punchy drums provided by Esteban Cruz.
