The album captures the group’s journey into dance-friendly indie-rock, heavily influenced by ’80s synth pop, while maintaining the eclectic collage of chord changes, lyrical references, stylistic left turns, and studio wizardry Kevin Barnes is known for. Joining them will be Lily and Horn Horse and local Pittsburgh group Chariot Fade, who’ve been steadily releasing singles and making waves with their new project. We spoke via phone with Barnes last month about his creative head space, how he maintains hope in the world today, and how sometimes you need to “dig into the dirt and see little worms crawling around.”

Edited for length and clarity.

Pop Press INTL: How are you preparing for the upcoming tour?

Kevin Barnes: At this point we’re doing a lot of pre-production stuff, getting the visuals, costuming and theatrical stuff together. And then in a week we’ll start getting musical rehearsals together.

PPI: Do you have a team that helps you with the production?

KB: Yeah my brother does most of the visual content and then he and a couple other people put the theatrical stuff together. I’ve been contributing a little bit more with the visuals, but historically that’s been his thing.

PPI: Does the production change night to night? Or does it stay pretty consistent?

KB: It’s more like a kind of “off-Broadway musical” type of thing. We get it together beforehand and then rehearse it. We don’t really know how it’s going to work out until we hit the road. And so once you hit the road you kind of figure out “oh, that didn’t work” or “we don’t really have enough time to do that” and you kind of tweak it. But for the most part once we figure out what works with the timing, we stay pretty true to that. Because it’s kind of hard to mix it up night to night because it could become a train wreck and we don’t want that. [laughs]

PPI: Well your live show is pretty legendary and your fan base is super dedicated – do you ever have a bad show?

KB: I mean, there are shows that we might consider bad because we were sloppy. But sometimes sloppy shows are the most fun to watch. So it’s hard to say, you know? What we might perceive as a bad show might be someone else’s favorite show. I try to remember that whenever I feel like, “oh man, we totally bombed tonight.” As long as people are laughing and clapping and having fun, that’s really a success.

PPI: Songwriting is a total mental workout, and it takes tons of stamina. And, you’ve pretty much released an album every year for the past twenty years. How do you stay in songwriting shape?

KB: I guess because I’m always thinking about the next one or hoping that another one will happen, I don’t really take it for granted that all these songs just continue to be born inside of me. I just try to stay in touch with it. It’s my main passion so I’m always tuned into that part of my brain. If a little melody line pops into my mind, I don’t disregard it. I’ll figure out how to play that part on the guitar or piano and document it, so I just kind of stay aware.

PPI: Do you use Voice Memo on your phone to capture those ideas?

KB: Yeah. I mean, before phones I would do it on a little Dictaphone. It’s a lot easier now because you can just push a little button and record it forever.

PPI: Your sound has developed and changed, but I don’t think anyone would say you haven’t stayed true to your voice. What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find their voice?

KB: I guess my advice would be don’t even bother, because it’s not something that you should struggle to find. It should just be there and you should just it show itself to you. As far as staying true to anything, I never worry about that because I think it’s inevitable that your creative identity will always be present, you know? No matter how much you try to be something else, there’s still a really strong part of your core being that’s being presented. I don’t think anyone should worry about being true or honest or faithful to anything because you should just be free to explore and experiment. There will always be some sort of thread that connects everything you make, organically.

PPI: So would you say the process, when you’re writing songs, is organic or deliberate? Do you have something in mind when you start a new project, or is it a mix of both?

KB: I guess it’s a mix of both in that I don’t want to just make the same record over and over again. I’m always looking for new sources of inspiration and new directions I can take with a project, and if I stumble upon something that feels exciting, then I’ll just throw myself into it. But then if I write a song that doesn’t fit that vibe at all, I’ll just let it be what it needs to be. And that’s why a lot of [my] records can feel kind of eclectic and feel like there isn’t necessarily a continuity between all the songs. On this new record, there’s all these happy love songs and then all of a sudden it becomes pretty dark and introspective. If I was really trying to make this a “fun” record like, I can’t really maintain that for too long. My mind starts to veer off in other directions, and I just try to let that happen and not really worry about it even though it feels like it might be kind of messing with the narrative, you know? My favorite records are the ones that have a lot of dynamic complexity and unpredictability. I mean, growing up my favorite records were things like the Beatles’ White Album or [The Kinks’] Village Green Preservation Society, or Velvet Underground records that have introspective, quiet, beautiful songs then loud crazy ones and lots of genre-hopping.

PPI: Were there any pieces of visual art, film, or significant events that inspired the new record?

KB: Yeah, definitely. I make a lot of references to things in the lyrics. Those are always things that inform and inspire the record. I reference Gary Indiana, the author. His work was really important to me when I was making the record. I was reading his novels and just kind of going through them all. Kathy Acker was another big influence. Diamanda Galas is in one of the songs. She’s been a huge influence on me as well from a performance perspective. And the amount of care and passion she puts in to her work is something I sort of strive for in mine. And then of course Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual and Janet Jackson and all those great pop records from the ‘80s, mid-‘80s. Culture Club and stuff like that were also big influences.

PPI: The first track is a beautiful call for positivity, and you reject cynicism, which feels good to hear, especially today. How do you maintain your hope these days?

KB: Well, 2020 feels more hopeful like this fog is slowly being lifted and people are beginning to see with more clarity. We’ll see what happens in November, but it does feel like we’ve sort of turned a corner. So that’s something to feel good about and we’ll see. I’m a huge Bernie Sanders supporter, so if Bern-dog gets the nomination, things will be moving in the right direction, and hopefully there’s salvation on the horizon.

PPI: Ok, the new record is called “Ur Fun.” Who is fun?

KB: You know, it’s supposed to be open to interpretation. Is it “you ARE fun?” or “this is your fun?” It’s a little bit of a play on “Yer Blues,” the John Lennon song from the White Album, and sort of a reminder that no matter how dark things seem, there still is fun. There’s still reason to be optimistic. I think it’s easy to get lost in this cyber world of reality but it’s sort of a false reality if you absorb the pain of the universe and everything bad. The news is basically going to deliver all of the sad, the unfortunate, unpleasant, painful aspects of the human experience to you, and so if you spend too much time reading articles on your phone staying in touch [trails…] We all want to be woke and stay conscious of everything that’s happening, but at the same time you have to balance that out with your physical reality, your physical world. You can step outside and listen to the birds singing, dig into the dirt and see little worms crawling around. You know, if you have a pet, look at your pet’s eyes and see the innocence there, “God this thing is so furry and cute, and it’s just there in my room and I can just pet it,” you know? There’s lots of things to be happy about. You have to just, I mean, I’m talking to myself really, ‘cause those are the things that I feel are important to myself, to unplug and just say, OK, what’s the news in my physical world today? What’s happening in my house, what’s happening on my street, what’s happening in my brain? There’s a lot of things that you have control over, or that aren’t just total shit, that are actually kind of cool and beautiful. Like right now, I’m looking out the window at this tree and there’s ivy growing on the tree. And that’s a beautiful thing, and thinking about the magic of flora [laughs] and there’s so much magic in existence that we can be focusing on, as well as all the dark things. So, it’s just kind of a way for us, or a reminder that You’re fun, you’re a fun person to be around, you have the capacity to make people feel good. And to bring more positivity into the world.

PPI: I really like that. I like the duality of what news is. Who decided what the news is, you know? I have news, it’s snowing outside and it’s going in slow motion and that’s really pretty. Yeah, read all about it.

What inspired the artwork?

KB: It’s pretty obscure and weird. Christina and I (my girlfriend and I) were at this really cool bookstore in New York called Printed Matter, and they have like a zillion fanzines and underground self-published work and there’s all sorts of great stuff to just peruse and flip through. And, we found this photobook of posters and advertisements for the remake of the Jean-Luc Godard film Breathless that was done, I think in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s, starring Richard Gere. And I never saw it, and by all accounts it’s not good. But for some reason some of the images that people used in other countries to promote the film were really interesting looking in a sort of janky way, and for whatever reason we kind of like, ripped it off, the two photos on top of each other at that angle, that rectangle, and the font that looks so basic and stupid. For some reason that jumped out at me and I was like, “Oh, that’s what we should do for the next record.”

PPI: For the most part you write, perform, engineer, and mix all of the records, which is pretty cool considering the live show is such a party atmosphere and the audience has even evolved into part of the whole production and that energy can be very collaborative. So, going back to the recording process, what do you enjoy about working solo in that environment?

KB: For me the creative process is equal parts therapy, escapism, and self-exploration. So, it feels more natural and relaxing to be by myself while I’m doing that, sort of mining my psyche. I feel that if there are other people in the room, I feel forced to make decisions more quickly, and I would do less experimenting because there’s this level of impatience that happens when you’re with a bunch of people. I could spend hours going in one direction and then realize it’s the wrong direction and then start again – it won’t bother me at all. It’s more fun for me to completely get lost in the process and hours and hours and hours go by and I’ll be like oh this was all bullshit, this was stupid. But I never feel like I wasted time because it was so fun to do, to go in that wrong direction for six hours. Occasionally, I do enjoy working with other people because of the immediacy of it and the improvisational aspect, and the communal aspect of it can be really fulfilling, too. I’ve made a couple records in the recently that I incorporated other people, mainly Clayton Rychlik and Jojo Glidewell, two guys that have been in the band for a while now. I’ve done a lot of stuff with them, and it’s cool because they’re able to offer something that I can’t really do myself. It’s fun to be able to kind of direct people and also be amazed by what someone else can think of and come up with.

PPI: How would you compare the new album to your previous work?

KB: I’d say sonically I try to move into a more sonically rich landscape with each record. Trying to understand audio, trying to understand waveforms. It’s kind of like a whole new world. Until you get into engineering, mixing, and mastering, you kind of just think of the immediacy of writing and recording a song. But it’s crazy how much the production is almost the song. You could have a song that, at its core, is really good or really bad, but it can be totally altered by the production and the method you use and the arrangement you decide to go with. And that’s one of the craziest things about working alone. You know, if I write a song on acoustic guitar I could make it basically any kind of song I want. It could be fast, it could be slow, could be reggaetón, it could be a ballad, it could be heavy metal, it could be whatever. Like “Don’t Let Me Die In America” [track 7 on Ur Fun] – I could have turned that into a ballad that would have been in the Twilight series or something. But I decided to go with a Stooges kind of vibe, and I’m like that’s it. I know Bob Dylan said, “yeah the recorded version is just one version.” When he’d go and play songs live he’d totally change them. It’s kinda cool recording by myself because it’s a work in progress all the way up to the point when I’m like “fine it’s done.” So that’s one of the cool things about working by yourself, that you can experiment a bunch and you can use different samples and different kinds of loops and things like that that would totally change the quality and feeling of the song. So, I guess I’m kind of going off on tangents, but Ur Fun, to me is sort of more playful than White is Relic which is more paranoid and neurotic feeling. Ur Fun is a little more carefree and relaxed for the most part.

PPI: So, it sounds like both things happen – you could be writing a song on the guitar and have an idea about a particular style that it could be, but also use the studio to flesh it out?

KB: Yeah, definitely. Sometimes when you write it you’re like this is obviously this kind of song, but then it’s kind of exciting to think “What if I bend it a little and turn it into a totally different kind of song that would feel more exciting for me?” That’s where my head’s at right now. I have all these songs, these new songs, and I’m thinking that it’s fun to try to reinvent yourself with each record. It’s not always possible but I think it’s sometimes cool when artists take a total left turn and go in some really weird way that no one expected just to prove that you can, because you never know. I feel like David Byrne does that a lot where he sort of like – obviously he’s a fucking genius and legend and doesn’t have anything to prove at this point and can do whatever he wants or never make another record and it wouldn’t matter – so I think it’s cool that he is still excited by the challenge of making something that feels fresh and new and exciting to him and hopes that that translates to other people as well. I feel like that’s where my head is at, too.

PPI: Yeah, I have a soft spot for folksy Americana stuff, so when Lousy with Sylvianbriar came out I had a really strong attachment to that because of those stylistic touches.

KB: Oh cool, yeah that’s a good example of me being like, I love Bob Dylan, I love Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and that whole scene. It would be cool to make a record that’s more like that early ‘70s Grateful Dead or you know, that kind of vibe. And even though it doesn’t sound anything like Hissing Fauna or the things I might be known for, it’s fun. Paralytic Stalks is another record that’s pretty far out as far as incorporating 20th century avant-garde classical composer influences and making non-accessible music. But I never go too far into non-accessible because I love accessible music. I love pop music. I don’t really just listen to Stockhausen or something. I respect it, and I think it’s cool to have elements of that in what I do, but for me I do love chords, I love song structures, I love melody lines and hooks and things like that, so no matter what I think that’s something I always try to put into my songs.

PPI: It’s hard to be challenged all the time. I’m curious to know what’s coming down the pike after tour. Is there something next you’re working on already or are you waiting until the time is right?

KB: I started another record, and I have maybe three songs in motion with that. Jojo and I have been working on a piano and vocal project, where he plays piano and I sing. It’s sort of chanteuse style, not necessarily crooning, just kind of doing old beautiful songs, not standards or anything, but kind of more obscure, beautiful old songs. So, we’re going to try and get that going. I’ve been getting more into making video collage art. That’s another thing I’ve been spending a lot of time on.

PPI: Will we see some of those video collages in the live show coming up?

KB: Yeah, I think so. My brother does most of the stuff, but I wanted to do at least one song, and he said he’d give me at least one song.

PPI: That’s kind of him.

of Montreal’s Never-ending Dance Party at Mohawk: Live Review

Bryan Parker

BLOG

FEATURES

LIVE MUSIC

#mohawk

dance party

Live Music

of Montreal

Of Montreal has the right to make the claim that they’re Mohawk’s house band, having played the venue three times in the last year. The group plays with flair and intensity that provides a dramatic edge to the group’s ethereal pop that has sonic texture akin to a gentry rolling fog bank. By use of programmed as well as live drums and an assortment of keys and guitars, Pillar Point’s songs offer a impressive range of nuance and diversity while remaining cohesive.

of Montreal’s show last night offered even more benefit than usual, as the band debuted two new songs from a forthcoming record. The album was recorded in El Paso, which helps explain in part why the band chose to hit Lubbock on this tour. Everyone falls in love with West Texas at some point. The rest of the setlist was rounded out by usual of Montreal hits such as “The Past is a Grotesque Animal,” “She’s a Rejector,” “Suffer for Fashion,” as well as newer standouts like “Fugitive Air” and mellow dream-pop track “Obsidian Currents.” Recent contributor Rebecca Cash has left the band, but her absence didn’t result in any slowing down. In fact, of the four of Montreal shows I’ve seen in the last year and half, I think this one packed more energy than ever.

Why belabor the point with words that can never contain the truly awesome nature of an of Montreal show? Better skip right to the photos. Even this can’t truly encapsulate all the wonder and joy, but we did our best. Suffice to say that next time the band comes through, we’ll be there, and so should you.

All photographs © Bryan C. Parker & Pop Press International; all rights reserved. The only thing that matters is that their live show is filled with visual spectacle and induces a joyous overflow of emotions. It’s always and all-out dance party and it’s always a ton of fun. Photo by Bryan Parker.

This baby goes to 11. I think we’ve made that joke before, but with a festival as high-energy as Austin Psych Fest is sure to be, the reference seems apt. Austin Psych Fest is this weekend, and we cannot wait. While other festivals are content to book the same circuit of bands and appeal to a broad (read: vanilla) audience, APF reaches into the depths of musical subcultures to bring an annual lineup of genre-blending, mind-expanding musicians. For sure, we’re excited about the festivals huge names, particularly The Zombies, arguably the fathers of all things psych rock. However, here’s a list of some of the artists you may or may not know that we consider not-to-be-missed. You can get your tickets for Austin Psych Fest here!

1. Shannon and the Clams

This garage pop trio signed to Hardly Art Records will bring the gritty rock and for all you psychedelic weirdos – this will be a set where it’s more than okay to let your freak flag fly. We saw the band last year and can attest to their outstanding live performance. Don’t miss this one.

2. WOODS

We reviewed WOODS’ new album With Light and With Love today. It’s great, and bassist Kevin Morby has got to be as practiced as anyone else at being onstage. If the guy isn’t cutting a record for WOODS or The Babies or on his own, he’s probably in a bar in your town. Solid new work from a great songwriter. This will be a great set.

3. Mirror Travel

Austin’s own Mirror Travel has made waves not only in town but also across the country since the release of their debut full-length Mexico on Modern Outsider last year. It’s an incredible noise rock album. The only thing better than hearing it recorded is seeing this trio deliver all that sonic texture live. See this band.

4. Bo Ningen

Not that we need to make a case for piercing, relentless Japanese acid punk, but I think we just did. Seriously, this four-piece will rock as hard as anyone all weekend long.

5. Medicine

Quintessential noise-rock band Medicine hasn’t made music together in more than a decade, but after Captured Tracks was able to secure the right to reissue their back catalogue, the group has reunited to release a new album and launch a tour. Many have been waiting for this for a long time. We’re more recent converts, but we’ll be there to witness it all the same. So should you.

6. of Montreal

If you’ve seen an of Montreal show, I really don’t need to say anything. If you haven’t here are a few words: insane luminous costumes, inflatable creatures, skeletons, confetti, projections, lights, dancing and more dancing. Frontman Kevin Barnes is one of the most captivating live performers in music. A must-see for the weekend.

7. Unknown Mortal Orchestra

One of the treats to seeing UMO live is that their live sets turn their songs into much more blistering psychedelic jams than on their album. If you’re looking for some epic guitar playing and hazy, late 60s-derived psych rock, here’s your band. This one we’re definitely personally looking forward to.

8. The War on Drugs

When The War on Drugs released “Red Eyes,” the first single ahead of their most recent album Lost in the Dream, we knew we were in for great things ahead. The War on Drugs will be loud and hazy and amazing.

9. Yamantaka // Sonic Titan

I don’t want to go into too much detail here, but I can say that having seeing Yamantaka // Sonic Titan before, their set is one of the most theatrical and artful performances in music. Don’t’ miss it.

10. Octopus Project

Octopus Project always puts on an amazing show ripe for a dance party. Recently, their show has become even more engaging with improved panels of screens for projections. The group is sure to be aurally and visually stimulating. It’ll be an undoubted highlight of the weekend.

11. Quilt

Since we missed Quilt’s recent show in Austin, we’re psyched (sorry, we avoided it for the whole post so far) about catching them this weekend. The group perfectly embodies the sound of the classic psych pop of the 60s. The weekend will consist of many brands and styles of psych music, but Quilt may recall the genre in its earliest form.

of Montreal at Mohawk: Live Review

Bryan Parker

BLOG

FEATURES

LIVE MUSIC

#mohawk

Features

Live Music

of Montreal

Seeing bands perform live music can be rewarding–the subtle differences in arrangement, the inability to dub over and redo, the immediacy, the intimacy. However, more often than not, live performances consist of a few people playing their instruments, reconstructing songs they’ve written for a group of fans. If that sounds mundane, it’s because it certainly can be. Then, there are bands like of Montreal–bands that redefine everything we know about live music. The band’s shows feature wild costumes (or the lack thereof), insane stage antics, light projections, and confetti cannons. Of course, all of this is made possible by the tirelessly upbeat, shimmering pop music created by the band.

Most notable about of Montreal’s performance at Mohawk on Friday night included the addition of new members and the performance of songs from the bands most recent (and significantly divergent) album Lousy With Sylvianbriar. Live cuts culled from that album included lead single “Fugitive Air” as well as “Belle Glade Missionaries” and “Raindrop In My Skull.” Although frontman Kevin Barnes and his crew did perform a plethora of songs from the group’s catalogue such as Hissing Fauna favorites “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse” and “She’s A Rejector.” Also incorporated into the set was a beautiful, stripped down three-part harmony that seems to be newly concocted and features the voice of drummer Clayton Rychlik and the lovely vocals of multi-instrumentalist Rebecca Cash.

Outside of the new songs, of Montreal’s set delivered the usual yet still amazing visual spectacle we’ve come to expect including towering winged creatures illuminated with projectors, skeletal beings, Kevin Barnes ultimately being partially disrobed, and triumphant set-ending crowd surfing by spandex-clad, disguised figures. of Montreal has been to Austin something like three times in the last year and they continue to sell-out shows. And often, I see the same fans packed into the crowd, standing center stage. of Montreal’s show is too stimulating to tire, and if you haven’t seen it, you need to.

<a From insane costumes of skeletons and creatures to sexually explicit cartoonish enactments to constantly visual and light stimulation, of Montreal is a show that never disappoints. The show falls on a Friday, so we don’t want to hear any of that work-week talk. BUY YOUR TICKETS HERE now and plan to come out to Mohawk on Friday night for this outstanding band who recently released their newest effort Lousy With Sylvianbriar on Polyvinyl this fall. Their shows utilize costume, performance, projected light, and a barrage of textured pop to provide a multi-sensory experience that induces sensory overload for viewers. Their show last night at the Mohawk closely resembled their last performance at the same venue a few months ago, though may have even expanded the surreal and absurd imagery employed.

Armless creatures with enormous fabric breasts, Skeletor, skeletal totem-like structures, inflatable penises, and a multi-person pope consisting of frontman Kevin Barnes at the top were only a few of the wild scenes to grace the stage. The show always unfolds as a photographer’s nightmare, full of incredible sights always pulsing with too much or too little light to capture the incredibly quick-moving figures onstage. At some point, Barnes lost his shirt and spent the rest of the show bare-chested, draped in a sheer, silky, patterned scarf.

The crowd at the show consisted of some of the exact same concertgoers who I saw at the last show, a testament to the band’s devoted fanbase. As string and ribbons covered Barnes from head to toe at the set’s end, fans grasped wildly for the streamers. of Montreal’s setlist contained usual crowd favorites such as “Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse,” “Suffer For Fashion,” and “She’s A Rejector.” Despite their frequent touring and recent Austin appearances, of Montreal can pack a house and excite a crowd better than any other band making music.

All photos © Bryan Parker and Pop Press International.
