In two weeks’ time, Day for Night Festival will take place in Houston, TX on December 19 & 20, featuring headliners such as Kendrick Lamar, New Order, Philip Glass Ensemble, and Death Grips among others. Brought to you by the same people who organize Free Press Summer Festival (which we love and attend annually), the festival ambitiously forays into the territory of both art and music, assembling a lineup with some of the current era’s most progressive musical artists as well as stunning visual artists.

People often maintain that artistic merit is dependent upon the listener/viewer. While this is of course true to some extent, it is still valuable to call attention to artists and performers one believes display particular artistic merit, and we’re encouraged by seeing Free Press Houston spotlight progressive artists and feature visual artists alongside world class musicians. Artists like CocoRosie, Death Grips, and BLACKIE seek to move culture forward with challenging approaches to both art mediums as well as social norms. We are excited to check out Day for Night’s inaugural event, and you should be too. Buy tickets here.
We’re killing all the birds with one stone. Today, the fest is upon us. To celebrate and send you off with the knowledge you need, we’re bringing you a list of six bands you can’t miss. If you don’t see any other acts at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2014. These are the ones to catch. If you still haven’t bought a ticket, you can get them at the door, and we highly recommend doing so. Listen: we write about a lot of music we love. We write about music we like and respect but don’t necessarily love. Fun Fun Fun Fest is far beyond and of that. We adore and treasure this festival. It won’t be oversold. It won’t be annoying. And every band booked is solid. Seriously, as a genuine plea out of love of all things music, you should be at this fest. We hope to see you there. Below are links to our previously run preview posts, followed by today’s list of the six you can’t miss.

FFF 2014: Courtney Barnett Interview

Seven Acts Playing Early You Might Miss

Lukas Read’s Ultimate Can’t Miss ’em List

And today’s list of the six bands you absolutely should not miss.

1. Neutral Milk Hotel – Sunday – Orange Stage

These creators of weird and wonderful indie-rock vanished from music for a decade. It could very well happen again, so seeing them should be a must. Not to mention the fact that their shows are cathartic and beautiful. These songs belong to everyone.

2. Iceage

This Danish punk band doesn’t come this way much and their new record is phenomenal.

3. Nas

Are you kidding? A rapper this legendary celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever released. Don’t be stupid.

4. Run the Jewels

This is one of hip-hop’s most exciting acts right now. Classic sounds with excellent lyricism that empowers individuals and challenges political structures. Killer Mike and El-P know what they’re doing.

5. Yo La Tengo

Something of a personal favorite here–they had to be on the list. Yo La Tengo has given us some of the most diverse and consistently astounding records released in the last decade or so. These folks are legends.

6. Majical Cloudz

For a while I kind of hedged my recommendation on this band, whose stark stage performances reflect their austere, minimal pop. But there’s something in frontman Devon Welsh’s intense, immediate deliver that’s undeniably transfixing.

Courtney Barnett

Some of the artists we’re most excited to see at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest are the up-and-coming acts that will take the stage in the early or mid-afternoon hours. You’d serve yourself well by showing up early and seeing some of the outstanding acts that will play long before the sun sets. Just one of those many acts is Courtney Barnett. We were fortunate enough to correspond with the wry Australian songwriter in advance of her appearance at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Check out that Q&A below and watch her video for “Avant Gardener” following the interview.

Lukas Truckenbrod: I feel like Australians and Texans are kindred spirits. What’s your quintessential Texan moment?

Courtney Barnett: That bit in Wayne’s World where they’re in front of the green screen, “Maybe you want to go to Texas. Howdy, Pardner let’s raise and rope broncos. Howdy y’all!”

LT: Tell me about your songwriting process. Do you tend to “let the spirit flow” or does it take a bit more work to tease your muse?

CB: Haha both i guess; I just write stuff all the time and then put it together into songs.

LT: Do you have a spirit plant?

CB: I feel a pretty eerie connection with the Ghost Gum. That’s not really a plant is it , more like a tree. I like Yuccas. I also love the Red Waratah. And Kangaroo Paw.

LT: Which FFF Fest stage is the best this year, Yellow (comedy), Orange (main), Black (metal/punk), or Blue (electronic/hip-hop)?

CB: Orange!!! or maybe Blue just for Gary Numan.

LT: Which artists are you most excited to share this bill with?

CB: Yo La Tango! I’ve had their record on repeat all year.

LT: If you were a taco, what kind of taco would you be?

CB: Fish with extra hot sauce and red cabbage. No pineapple, ew.

–

One of the benefits of music festivals is getting to see a bunch of bands you’ve never seen in such a short time frame. Which is why I’m always shocked by the fact that festivals feel a little empty early in the day. Here’s your chance! The music is great, and you don’t have to deal with the hassle of headliner-sized crowds. This is the best part of the fest! In the spirit of my love for up-and-coming and lesser-known bands, here is a list of six bands playing early in the day that you just might miss if you’re not paying attention.

1. Spider Bags – Friday – 12:15 – Orange Stage

Garage rock with a lot of distortion and a lot of heart. Rock on!

2. Dana Falconberry – Friday – 1:10 – Orange Stage

Elegant and beautiful folk that ranges from pop oriented to decidedly experimental.

3. Zorch – Saturday – 12:10 – Blue Stage

Weirdo electronic pop that’s as cerebral as it is chaotic.

4. Twin Peaks – Saturday – 12:20 – Black Stage

Hazed out surf rock coming to you from a garage in Chicago.

5. Fat White Family – Saturday – 1:10 – Black Stage

If you like sweat, nudity, and all out insanity, here’s your ticket. Who doesn’t like sweat, nudity, and insanity?

6. Good Field – Sunday – 11:30AM – Orange Stage

Dreamy, understated pop gems that channel Big Star, Yo La Tengo, and Bob Dylan.

7. Angel Olsen – Sunday – 3:15 – Orange Stage

A garage pop heroine that sounds like Patsy Cline doing her best Leonard Cohen with a healthy dose of grit.

Fun Fun Fun Fest starts a week from today! Rest assured, we’ll have plenty of previews for you in the coming days spotlighting the aspects of the festival we’re most looking forward to. Until then, we’ll just say this: when we went to make a list of who shouldn’t be missed, we almost couldn’t do it. The lineup is just that good. There’s no filler or fluff. Every stage is packed with outstanding acts from the first slot to the last each day. Until we get our shit together and decide, here’s a playlist of some of the artists that we can’t wait to see. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, do the right thing.

Do we have to explain that Scotland’s Belle and Sebastian don’t make the trip across the pond much? Have you heard of Eminem? I’m pretty sure that you can answer those questions for yourself, so even though I’m also stoked that Beck and Spoon are playing, I’m bringing you a list of nine bands that you might accidentally miss at the first weekend of ACL. Although Austin easily draws some of music’s most recognizable names, the industry here is built on the backs of hard-working acts playing the clubs night in and night out. These are those bands. Get out early and show them some love.

1. Sphynx – Friday – 12:00 – Austin Ventures Stage

This Austin based band create danceable pop built on synthed-out soundscapes. If you’re looking for a place to kick start your festival, here is where you start.

2. The Preatures – Friday – 1:00 – Austin Ventures Stage

Sydney, Australia’s funk-tinged tunes are pretty infectious. Funk can be hit or miss, but by incorporating a little reverb-soaked pop and soulful vocals, the group is spot on.

3. Blank Range – Friday – 2:15 – BMI

Blank Range uses wandering guitar progressions and 60s organ to make music that recalls CCR and gives nods to other folk rock greats like The Band and Bob Dylan. These bluesy rock tunes will undoubtedly find favor with Austinites.

4. Wild Moccasins – Saturday – 11:30 – Miller Lite Stage

Houston band Wild Moccasins keep getting love from large festivals with these early spots. They’re energetic and convincing onstage as they pump out upbeat indie rock jams. They’re worth showing up early. Plus, the weather is supposed to be nice and cool. Get out in the crisp morning air and support this Texas band.

5. Benjamin Booker – Saturday – 1:00 – Austin Ventures Stage

After you see the video of Benjamin Booker rocking through bluesy songs that nod in the direction of punk rock, you’ll have him on your list, too.

6. Mac DeMarco – Saturday – 1:30 – RetailMeNot Stage

Prepare to rock. Prepare to laugh your ass off. As our own contributor Laney Renee once pointed out, Mac DeMarco is like Bart Simpson all grown up and fronting a kick-ass garage rock band. Don’t miss this set.

7. My Brightest Diamond – Saturday – 4:30 – Sculpture Stage

Epic pop teeming with lush instrumentation, the music of My Brightest Diamond recalls the work of labelmate Sufjan Stevens. If you’re a fan of theatrical, dextrous pop music, this is your jam.

8. The Wans – Saturday – 6:30 – BMI Stage

With all the folk and roots based music that dominates the lineup of ACL each year, it’s nice to have some dirty guitars and garage rock. Granted, even this band owes a lot to blues, but if you’re tired of acoustic guitars, find yourself at The Wans on Saturday evening.

9. Haerts – Sunday – 11:30 – Miller Lite Stage

I’m surprised Haerts still haven’t quite blown up completely. Almost a year ago, the band started gaining some traction and have remained relevant, but I just keep waiting for them to explode into the next level. Maybe this will be the weekend. After all, their country-leaning, Fleetwood Mac-like vocals over well crafted and airy pop deserve your attention. Just listen to this:

10. The Districts – Sunday – 12:15 – Samsung Galaxy Stage

These sparse, understated folk tunes eventually explode into cathartic rockers as the band delivers gritty and arresting onstage performances. After the first time we saw The Districts, we were totally sold. You will be, too.

11. Nikki Lane – Sunday – 2:00 – Austin Ventures Stage

You’ll hear Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach’s thumbprint on Nikki Lane’s gritty country sound, but Lane brings her own Nashville flair to these dark country rock songs. Forget that radio country pop shit, this is edgy, outlaw country descended from the stylings of Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle.

On the tail of their most recent, excellent release, Lese Majesty, the duo of Ishmael Butler and Tendai Maraire will perform on the outdoors stage of Red 7. A combination of both traditional and more eccentric production styles, Shabazz Palaces have proven over the course of two LP’s they are not a predictable project. 2011’s critically acclaimed Black Up was a masterpiece of sound collage, subversive sampling techniques, and rapid-fire lyrical control. In the same regard, Majesty keeps pace technically, but replaces the more complicated themes of urban decay with a hand gripped tight around the history of sci-fi in pop culture. It should prove to be an interesting evening, as they will share the venue with Seattle’s doom and gloom veterans Earth on the indoor stage.
–

1. The Lineup

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-13994 size-thumbnail" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/FPSF_2013-2-150x150.jpg" alt="2 Chainz performs at FPSF 2013.
2 Chainz performs at FPSF 2013. Photo by Bryan Parker.

Year after year, I’m impressed by FPSF’s lineup. This festival, along with Austin Psych Fest and Fun Fun Fun Fest, possess some of the remaining shreds of authenticity in the festival circuit. Jack White and Vampire Weekend will headline the festival, and while you may see those names on other bills across the country, FPSF uses much of the lineup to dedicate to hip-hop and rising indie rock outfits, especially those from the Houston area. Some of our favorite names on the bill this year are Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Childish Gambino, Sky Ferreira, King Khan & The Shrines, Jana Hunter, The Tontons, and Sylvan Esso.

2. The Environment

Ben Gibbard performs with The Postal Service at FPSF 2013. Photo by Bryan Parker.

FPSF is still a festival where you can actually see the bands performing. For one, the attendance each year is just about the perfect amount. As with any festival, if you want to see the headliners, you’ll have to stake out some territory early and wait a while. However, for much of the day, getting pretty close to the stages isn’t an impossible task. But it’s not only the attendance that enables the ability to see the performing bands—it’s also the fact that the main stages are positioned at the bottom of a huge hill, in effect creating a natural amphitheater environment. This is a feature that can’t be underestimated. If you’re worried about the heat at FPSF, the next point will assuage your fears.

3. The Price

Arctic Monkeys perform at FPSF 2013. Photo by Bryan Parker.

You can currently get a weekend pass to FPSF for $160. It’s almost staggering how much more affordable it is than other festivals. However, I think there’s a better buy. For the same price as an ACL ticket, around $230, you can purchase FPSF’s Fancy Pants pass. That ticket will allow you into air-conditioned tents with shorter bar lines. Having been to both ACL and FPSF many times, I can easily say that I find myself more overheated at ACL than FPSF. Being able to take a break in an A/C tent is an amazing perk. You feel totally rejuvenated and ready to see more music after 20 minutes or so.

4. The Fun

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-13996 size-thumbnail" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/FPSF_2013-5-150x150.jpg" alt="Japandroids Perform at FPSF 2013.
Japandroids perform at FPSF 2013. Photo by Bryan Parker.

I love Austin—deeply, sincerely. That said, ACL has gotten so crowded and has become the kind of festival where people sit around drinking and almost don’t even watch music. Houston’s music community is something of an underdog, and as a result it’s still exciting, still fresh, and the citizens are much more engaged. Similar to my beloved Fun Fun Fun Fest, FPSF is a festival that still has a youthful spirit. And I think the fun has something to do with my last point.

5. The Summer

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-thumbnail wp-image-13998" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/FPSF_2013-7-150x150.jpg" alt="The Men perform at FPSF 2013.
The Men perform at FPSF 2013. Photo by Bryan Parker.

For me, FPSF has become the way to kick off my summer. There’s just a palpable excitement to the festival’s atmosphere. It probably helps that I’m an educator nine months out of the year and am completely ecstatic come June. It may sound cheesy, but each year, I genuinely feel like the tone of FPSF celebrates the summer, celebrates Houston, and celebrates music. I’ve come to love this festival, and hope to see you in Houston this year May 31-June 1. Buy your tickets here.

You’re looking for the bottom line. Something a little more refined. We’ve whittled that list down to a fewer number of MUST SEE artists performing at Fun Fun Fun Fest this weekend, and we’ve given you a very brief few words as to why. This baby goes to eleven.

1. Television – Saturday, Orange Stage 5:50

Do not miss Television, because I couldn’t even find the last time they’ve played in Texas, and Marquee Moon is one of the greatest albums of all time. See this band above all else.

You need a reason to go to Fun Fun Fun Fest? You need more than the best weather imaginable? You need more than the beautiful scenery of Auditorium Shores? The lineup itself affords a couple of hundred very good reasons for attending, and this week we’re highlighting a few. Cayucas hails from Santa Monica and infuses their breezy pop with all of the sunny summer that defines their native land. If you’re looking to stretch that summer vibe out for a few more months as our Texas fall weather begins to settle in, here’s your perfect soundtrack. Reverb tinged surf tunes recount young love and carefree fun on the band’s debut album Bigfoot, out now on the always trustworthy Secretly Canadian label. Below we share with you several singles and videos from the band. Cayucas plays the Orange Stage at 1:20 on Sunday November 10th and headlines a Nites showcase at Mohawk later that evening.
