The year, bands had an added incentive to apply: one band would be chosen to be mentored through their studio time by renowned indie rock band Spoon’s frontman Britt Daniel. That band ended up being San Marcos’ The Two Lips, and the entire experience was documented by Converse Rubber Tracks in a short film. Check out that film and hear the resulting finished song below. Frankly, the program was so incredible it seemed almost too good to be true. But rest assured, there are no catches. Converse Rubber Tracks will select six Texas bands to receive absolutely free studio time, no strings attached, at a facility in Austin during SXSW. These bands will have an opportunity to use the studio time however they’d like and will have access to a talented producers and engineers, as well as top-notch recording facilities. We spoke with bands that decided to use the time to polish off tracks they’d already been working on and begin mastering. Another group decided to focus only on one song to get the best single possible completed. Other bands might start from scratch to get demos of new songs sketched out. The bands get to choose.

In addition to this valuable studio time, Converse Rubber Tracks has announced that Spoon’s Britt Daniel will help to select a local band to mentor over a special two-day session in the studio. This year will mark the first year that Converse Rubber Tracks will be held at 12th Street Sound, located at 2205 E 12th S | Austin, TX 78702. Okay, you’re sufficiently convinced (why wouldn’t you be?). How do you apply? After a delayed start to the headliner’s set, the four guys walked up the front of the well-lit Parish stage and donned their instruments. The first chiming chords filled the smoky chamber and the bright drums jumped into sight. A second guitar played a counter melody to the chords of the first and the creaky old Fender Mustang bass in dark green plodded along, the paint chipping away to expose the wood grain underneath, round notes bouncing. I tend to rave about the sound system at the Parish and this night was no different, making the show that much more engaging, removing any distractions from the mix. But also contributing to the sound and ultimately the experience were those old instruments and the vibe they were throwing at us. Decades of sweat from decades of hands have gripped, fretted, and plucked the strings holding the instruments together. An old guitar has a smell to it that is unique to that instrument. Usually some combination of must, salt, and rusty corrosion with a light sprinkling of incense, a guitar exudes its own style, and the player needs to realize how one can tease the most mojo from that particular character. After all, they’ve recorded many of their old songs during past appearances on the longstanding, revered television series. I can’t say I was disappointed; I am a fan of the new album. But heading into Saturday night, I had high hopes that their set would feature a few more tunes excavated from the dust of of their back catalog. I couldn’t be happier to report that I didn’t find myself disappointed.

After photographing the early songs of the set, I stood at the back of the packed amphitheater at Stubb’s grinning ridiculously, dancing, and pumping my fist as the setlist unfolded. Only eight of the twenty-one songs Spoon played Saturday night came from either of the two newest efforts, They Want My Soul or Transference. The selection of songs featured a pair of cuts from as far back as 2001’s Girls Can Tell: “Everything Hits At Once” and “Anything You Want.” The latter was conspicuously absent from the band’s impromptu tour kick-off show earlier this year. While I hate to expect a band to always play a song, the track’s final lines, “Cause you know you’re the one and that hasn’t changed/ Since you were nineteen and still in school waiting on a light on the corner by Sound Exchange,” feel essentially Austin. Sound Exchange was a beloved record store that once inhabited the northwest corner of Guadalupe and 21st, where you can also find the famous Hi How Are You graffiti. Hearing the lines always gives me chills of joy.

“I Summon You” from Gimme Fiction and “Jonathan Fisk” from Kill the Moonlight were other deep cuts and set highlights from the performance. Energetic and tight, the five-piece rocked through songs without spending much time on stage banter. It’s hard to have a complaint about such a killer set, but it would have been nice to hear just one track from A Series of Sneaks, maybe “30 Gallon Tank” or “Car Radio.” I’ve been watching Spoon almost since I moved to Austin in 2001, and they’ve reached the point of impossibility with regard to pleasing everyone in the crowd. Too many great songs over the span of too many great albums, which isn’t the worst problem to have. It probably needs its own hashtag, #rocklegendsproblems or something. If Spoon keeps putting out great albums, we’ll have to keep suffering through these difficulties, but I’m okay with it. In fact, I couldn’t be prouder of the band.

Like a true class act, Spoon asked local power pop mainstays A Giant Dog to open. The gesture seemed particularly thoughtful, considering that frontwoman Sabrina Ellis’ other band Sweet Spirit played after Spoon at their surprise Hotel Vegas show back in May. Playing afterward meant that not too many of Spoon’s fans stuck around to catch the set, so it was nice to see Ellis and her band, which includes members of OBN IIIs, get that opening act love on Saturday night. A Giant Dog puts on the kind of show you can’t ignore, as Ellis stomps about the stage clad in spandex. If you need a recommendation for a place to start with their music, I’ve always enjoyed “All I Wanted,” the first track from their album Bone.

All photographs © Bryan C. The best part of a Spoon show has always been the band’s ability to capture the nature of their lean indie rock and produce tight renditions of their recorded material. Hearing the group play in The Moody Theater’s pristine setting with impeccable sound and stunning lights simply added to the appeal.

Spoon; photo courtesy of KLRU / Scott Newton

Band members seemed particularly unhinged during the taping, with frontman Britt Daniel dropping the mic a couple of times and guitarist Eric Harvey managed to both take out his mic stand and get the cord wrapped around the neck of his guitar before flinging the mic to the floor. Not to mention that drummer Jim Eno took it upon himself to take away the camera from the videographer nearest him and parade around the stage shooting closeups of the rest of the band. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen anyone do it at a taping, and I was damn impressed with the willingness to cross that boundary. Spoon closed the night out with a rousing rendition of upbeat indie pop track “Underdog” as the crowd danced and sang along. If you still haven’t been able to see one of the band’s many recent performances, they play tomorrow night at Stubb’s. However, the show’s sold out, so you’ll have to turn to Craigslist or scalpers. If you want my opinion, it’s worth it.

Spoon Shares New Track “Do You” Ahead of They Want My Soul

Bryan Parker

BLOG

TRACKS

#spoon

Do You

indie rock

They Want My Soul

Tracks

Yesterday, Austin indie rock outfit Spoon shared “Do You,” the second single from their upcoming studio album They Want My Soul. The song’s backbone features Brit Daniel’s recognizable melodic growl and Jim Eno’s tight, no-frills drumming. Around those lynchpins swirls a sea of watery synths and reverb-laden background vocals. The track is stellar, and feels like the Spoon that won me over around 2002. Photo by Bryan Parker.

Spoon’s new plan for encouraging vinyl purchases ahead of their new album has me almost weepy over humanity’s ability to still be uplifting and beautiful. We all lament the failings of these systems we exist within, but it’s rare that someone actually takes time to figure out a different plan. Spoon’s new program requires a little bit of risk for all parties involved, and I know I’m going to be doing my part to support their Vinyl Gratification program. Brit Daniel’s post deserves to be read in its entirety; here’s what the band posted to Facebook yesterday along with an explanation of how the program works.

A few weeks ago as we were figuring out how to roll out the new Spoon album I kept coming back to this: why do we incentivize people to buy our music from big outlets but we don’t extend the same courtesy to actual record stores? Case in point: why do we encourage listeners to buy early by offering “instant gratification” tracks for pre-orders of the digital album, yet there’s no special motivation for buying music from Waterloo or Reckless Records? And there’s no incentive to buy the format that so many of those listeners prefer—an actual physical item they can hold and read and play on a turntable.

So I came up with an idea, and today I’m pretty ecstatic to be able introduce the Vinyl Gratification program. It’s the first program of its kind; it encourages pre-ordering a vinyl copy of our new album They Want My Soul at independent record stores all over the US (and soon, internationally) by providing its own sort of instant gratification: a limited edition 10″ vinyl featuring three pre-release songs from the album that you can take home with you and put on your record player immediately. The great people at Record Store Day have generously offered to spread the word about the program and we’re launching with 150 stores on board, well beyond our wildest dreams.

The way it works is

1) Starting July 15, find a participating record store near you by going to www.vinylgratification.com.
2) Pre-order your copy of the album and hold on to your receipt as proof of purchase.
3) Take home your 10″ and listen on great-sounding 45RPM vinyl to three songs from the album before the album is released.
4) On or after August 5 when They Want My Soul comes out, bring your receipt back to the store where you pre-ordered, get your 180g white vinyl copy of the LP, take it home or to a friend’s house, and listen to your new album.

I hope you’ll join us in supporting the independent record shops that have supported us for so long.

Britt Daniel
Austin, TX

Spoon Shares “Rent I Pay” From Upcoming LP They Want My Soul

Bryan Parker

BLOG

TRACKS

#spoon

indie rock

Rent I Pay

They Want My Soul

Tracks

I’ve been meaning to post the new Spoon all week. Although it’s unlikely, if you somehow managed to miss it all week, you’re welcome! If you’ve seen it slathered everywhere, as I have, it won’t hurt to hear it again, since it’s outstanding. I’ve been a Spoon fan for a long time, as I’ve written before. However, there have been brief moments where I’ve been less than floored. Specifically, I never thought the brass arrangements suited what Spoon has always done so well–tight, muscular indie rock with a balance of pop and grit. “Rent I Pay,” the first track to emerge from the Austin band’s forthcoming LP, The Want My Soul, due out August 5th, is everything I love about a Spoon song. Hard hitting drums provide the backbone as frontman Britt Daniel snarls over choppy guitars and subtle keys. The track has just enough reverb and noise to achieve that relaxed coolness Spoon was built on. Listen below.

Sweet Spirit Headlined Spoon’s Tour Kickoff Show

Bryan Parker

BLOG

FEATURES

LIVE MUSIC

#spoon

Hotel Vegas

Live Music

Sabrina Ellis

Sweet Spirit

Last week, Spoon played a surprise tour kickoff show at small East Austin club Hotel Vegas. The headliner for the night was Sweet Spirit. I wrote about Spoon’s show last week and have been on a Spoon kick ever since. The night took me back to my earliest days of discovering music in Austin circa 2001, and the nostalgia has kept me invigorated and inspired for the last several days. In light of all this, I didn’t feel it was right to detract from how magical the night was by questioning the band’s actions. And, admittedly, I don’t know all the factors that went into the show’s organization. However, here, in a post focusing on new Austin band Sweet Spirit, I feel I have to address a puzzling reality.

Since Spoon must have possessed the ultimate say-so on who played when, I’m not sure why they didn’t insist that Sweet Spirit played before them, offering their fans a chance to experience a younger local act. Of course, no one should expect someone else to do something for them, and the opportunity to share a poster and be in conversation with Spoon shouldn’t be scoffed at. Still, it seems to me like the thing to do would be to make sure your audience also saw the act you shared a bill with, especially since the crowd stood waiting from around 8:30 until 10:00–plenty of time for Sweet Spirit to play a set. I’m sure a few fans stuck around, but it was hard to ignore Sweet Spirit frontwoman Sabrina Ellis’ statement as she shielded her eyes from the stage lights and peered out into the crowd: “It’s awesome to see all my friends here after Spoon’s friends left.”

Indeed, those who hung around to catch the set were the true rock ‘n’ roll fans–the die-hard local music devotees who show up every week, mid-week to see bands pouring their heart and soul into creating music. Sabrina Ellis deserves our attention and devotion. She also fronts power pop act A Giant Dog and formerly fronted Bobby Jealousy before forming Sweet Spirit, her newest musical project. This new band bears similar elements to her preceding endeavors; it’s a rock band with plenty of grit and energy, but the band seems to have a little more soul and lean more toward classic rock riffs. Certainly, the recorded sounds of the future will lend a greater understanding of Sweet Spirit’s aims and ethos. For the time being, it’s safe to say that Ellis is likely Austin’s most charismatic frontwoman and that Sweet Spirit’s live show packs enormous punch. Sweet Spirit’s show last Tuesday showcased these qualities as Ellis danced unabashedly as her and her band kicked out powerful and raw rock jams.

If you stuck around, you likely saw that Spoon, like many other band that garner top praise and dominate the spotlight, isn’t the only band making outstanding music in Austin–a truth that I know holds up in cities across the nation. Spoon is a great rock band, and they’ve released some classic albums. In part, they helped to put Austin on the map, but Austin’s music community continues to thrive for many other reasons, and it’s vital that we hold sacred hardworking bands alongside those who’ve made it. For your own sake and for the sake of Austin music, we hope you were among those who stuck around. If not, you have another chance to see them soon. The band plays an incredible bill at Cheer Up Charlies on June 8th for Marmalakes tour homecoming show along with Grape St. and Genuine Leather. It’s a powerhouse bill, and we advise attending.

All photos © Bryan Parker & Pop Press International; all rights reserved. Last night Spoon played their first show in two years–a surprise event announced a few hours before set time and held at Hotel Vegas, a small club that accommodates only around 200 people. Around the time I moved to this city, Spoon had just released Girls Can Tell and would soon find greater commercial success with their breakthrough album Kill The Moonlight. I had heard a little about the band in 2001, but when Kill the Moonlight dropped, they were unavoidably everywhere. The album cover still feels iconic to me as one piece of art that was plastered everywhere just at the time that I was evolving from a kid who loved music to a person deeply dedicated to and entrenched in independent label music and local bands.

If you lived in Austin at the time, all of this might resonate with you. I’ve had the opportunity to see Spoon at all stages of their rise to indie rock sainthood–at the old Emo’s, at La Zona Rosa, at The Backyard, at festivals. I caught a few Britt Daniel solo sets at small clubs including a weird one at Red Eyed Fly one SXSW. Last night’s show was just as good as any time I’ve seen the band. The excitement of the last minute announcement, fans showing up early to wait in line, a room that only holds about 200 people tops–these elements contributed to a palpable excitement that defined the evening.

After hanging around for the better part of two hours, Spoon took the stage and kicked their set off with “Don’t You Evah” from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Next, the band launched into Kill the Moonlight‘s opening track “Small Stakes,” the crowd erupted into applause. The band avoided playing any songs from their upcoming record, instead sampling the classics from across their discography. While I disagreed with the band’s decision to play “You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb” over Girls Can Tell‘s “Fitted Shirt,” which was listed as an alternate, the night did hold in store a few older numbers such as “Utilitarian” from 1998’s A Series of Sneaks and crowd-pleaser “The Way We Get By.” As good as the evening was, I’m not sure how the band left “Anything You Want” off the setlist, considering the hometown crowd and the song’s geographically relevant final line. No Spoon song transports me back to earlier versions of myself like “Anything You Want,” and it was sorely missed. Hard-hitting rock tracks “The Beast and Dragon, Adored,” “My Mathematical Mind,” and “Jonathan Fisk” were set highlights in a set that carried propulsive energy for its duration.

Spoon has always excelled at creating lean, no-frills indie rock; there’s something essential about them. Although the claim may run up against some dispute, I still see them as a prototype and forerunner to a slew bands that would take Spoon’s formula and find widespread acclaim–bands like Interpol, The Walkmen, and The Strokes. There was a time around 2003 where I listened to Spoon obsessively almost dedicatedly; I listened to them enough to turn them into my younger brother’s all-time favorite band. Last night, I felt proud to live in Austin, a city that gave rise to this band.

All photos © Bryan Parker & Pop Press International; all rights reserved.
