The event marked the first sold-out show I&#8217;ve seen in the space, since Red Eyed Fly closed and operations at Red 7 effectively switched to inhabit the venue as The Sidewinder. Even before the openers began, the room was full and only grew fuller as the night went on.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Protomartyr_022616-2.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-21755" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Protomartyr_022616-2-150x150.jpg" alt="Protomartyr_022616-2" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Protomartyr_022616-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Protomartyr_022616-2-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Protomartyr_022616-2-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Before Protomartyr began their set, frontman Joe Casey swayed lethargically, smoking a cigarette with apparent apathy and grasping a PBR tall boy. Donned in his usual full suit, he&#8217;s iconically paradoxical in a live setting. The set began with lukewarm energy, but retained the definitive power of the group&#8217;s angular guitar riffs and propulsive rhythms. Slowly, the band worked into a frenzied state. The set grew more caustic with each song played until each cut was unapologetically blistering. Protomartyr performed live versions of excellent songs from their new album, <i>The Agent Intellect</i>, including &#8220;I Forgive You&#8221; and &#8220;Why Does it Shake?&#8221;. The record is the band&#8217;s third and follows another widely acclaimed album &#8220;Under Color of Official Right,&#8221; from which the band culled several songs for the performance. The band will be back for several shows at SXSW, and I highly recommend checking them out.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Spray_Paint_022616-3.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-21763" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Spray_Paint_022616-3-150x150.jpg" alt="Spray_Paint_022616-3" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Spray_Paint_022616-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Spray_Paint_022616-3-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Spray_Paint_022616-3-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Austin punk veterans Spray Paint opened the night. The three-piece is all business onstage, keeping the banter to a minimum while powering through dissonant songs. With two guitars and no bass, the song structures utilize competing discordant notes to bounce off of one another in contentious harmonization. Forceful and imposing, Spray Paint&#8217;s songs feel like theoretical explorations of sound and rhythm, and their songs translate more clearly live than on any recording. The group plays out frequently, so if you haven&#8217;t seen them yet, it&#8217;s on you.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Xetas_022616-5.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-21771" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Xetas_022616-5-150x150.jpg" alt="Xetas_022616-5" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Xetas_022616-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Xetas_022616-5-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Xetas_022616-5-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Xetas opened the night with a set of furious punk songs, as guitarist David Lee Petro and bassist Kana Harris alternated vocal duties. As an added benefit the bands already arresting songs, Xetas literally bound about the stage with relentless energy. Petro bounces up and down as Harris takes a wide stance, grinning as she thumps out steady bass lines. Xetas previously released material on Gerard Cosloy&#8217;s respected 12XU imprint, and rumor has it they&#8217;ll have some new material in the impending future.</p>

<p>A light sweat covering his face, <span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://johnwesleycoleman.bandcamp.com/track/oh-woman"><span style="color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;">John Wesley Coleman</span></a></span> strummed through a couple of his best C-major compositions kicking off the Monofonus showcase at Hotel Vegas Friday night. With a lighter amount of sarcasm than his usual irony soaked, drunken ramblings contain, Coleman kept things steady, acoustic, and poignant. Bandless, and facing his audience with sunglasses, it was an unusually tender way to commence the evening.</p>
<div id="attachment_17414" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 150px"><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-2.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-17414 size-thumbnail" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-2-150x150.jpg" alt="Spray_Paint-2" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-2-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-2-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a></p>
<p class="wp-caption-text">Spray Paint; photograph by Bryan C. Parker</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://marriageatx.bandcamp.com/"><span style="color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;">Marriage</span></a></span> came to stage and completely eliminated all remnants of tenderness. The no-wave vikings took to stage with percussion galore and enough effects to fund a Michael Bay film. Switching between synths, drums, bass and guitars, the bearded members of Marriage blasted through a manic, thunderous set of overwhelmingly intoxicating noise rock (Boredoms and Flying Saucer Attack come to mind, though understanding they’re former members of Black Eyes and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, it all makes total sense).</p>
<div id="attachment_17411" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 150px"><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-5.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-17411 size-thumbnail" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-5-150x150.jpg" alt="Spray_Paint-5" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-5-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-5-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a></p>
<p class="wp-caption-text">Spray Paint; photograph by Bryan C. Parker</p>
</div>
<p>Reeling in satisfaction from the previous set and still chatting with multiple pleased attendees lingering around the stage, local punk rabble-rousers <span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://ghettoghouls.bandcamp.com/track/atomic-bomb-3"><span style="color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;">Ghetto Ghouls</span></a></span> quickly maneuvered their stage set-up. The four-piece took no time gathering momentum, punching into their A.D.D. interpretation of classic punk tropes. Mumbled, spittle-lipped ramblings made sense only in context of the driving guitar/bass interplay, drunkenly convincing the crowd to believe (in what? who even knows).</p>
<div id="attachment_17408" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 150px"><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/The_Rebel-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-17408 size-thumbnail" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/The_Rebel-1-150x150.jpg" alt="The_Rebel-1" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/The_Rebel-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/The_Rebel-1-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/The_Rebel-1-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a></p>
<p class="wp-caption-text">The Rebel; photograph by Bryan C. Parker</p>
</div>
<p>Curiously, as main-act <span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://spraypaint.bandcamp.com/"><span style="color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;">Spray Paint</span></a></span> was scheduled to take the stage, so appeared <span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://soundcloud.com/neen-records/neen002-the-rebel-i-cried-out"><span style="color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;">The Rebel</span></a>.</span> Long loops of keyboard and feedback crept and pressed as the oddly dressed Ben Wallers spun around onstage pawing at his Stratocaster, partly with intent, but with just as much confusion. With one key taped down, a synthesizer droned on as he sang the first notes of his poetic montage. Sending songs through no filter, Wallers spat through a muck of gorgeous slacker hymns. Lyrics mangled with vulgarity and a beautifully awkward vocabulary, the songs somehow ended up somewhere between The Clean and Syd Barrett. Aptly named, The Rebel is an outsider looking for a way in, just not quite knowing how to phrase it.</p>
<div id="attachment_17409" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 150px"><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-7.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-17409 size-thumbnail" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-7-150x150.jpg" alt="Spray_Paint-7" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-7-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-7-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Spray_Paint-7-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a></p>
<p class="wp-caption-text">Spray Paint; photograph by Bryan C. Parker</p>
</div>
<p>A not-quite-encore ended with the Spray Paint boys accosting Wallers to play two more, the crowd not disagreeing. At 1 a.m., immediately after his set, they took the stage with enough drunken excitement to raise the crowd to their standards. Guitars in their dissonant perfection chugged through a perfectly timed romp that would sum up the bands entire set. The post-punk fireworks display the followed was filled with every punk show cliché in all the best ways. The songs, sonically, blended altogether with very little in-between, while the audience pushed and swayed with sweat, beer spraying at short intervals. Material from their new record <span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;"><a href="http://monofonuspress.com/store/spray-paint-3"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><em>Clean Blood, Regular Acid </em></span></a></span>drove the crowd to a frenzy while the band swung their heads back with every long swig of beer. Through every 20-pound note, the band muscled the set to its breaking point of last call. Lights flickering and floor wet with mysterious liquid, Hotel Vegas was shut down with the purest rock’n’roll integrity. The no-wave trio will be celebrating the release of their new LP <em>Clean Blood, Regular Acid. </em> A set of their noisiest, dark-humored barnburners will be placed on a bill stacked with kindred spirits (Ghetto Ghouls/The Rebel/Marriage/John Wesley Coleman). Tense and aggressive, Spray Paint&#8217;s smirking take on post-punk binds together manic dueling guitars with robotic rigid percussion. Their formula is one that is most refreshing to the Austin punk scene, while still remaining equally classic as they are forward thinking. Tangled in alternate tunings and irregular time signatures, Spray Paint have made their bed on a sheet of aluminum being ripped up by chainsaws. <em>Clean Blood, Regular Acid</em> arrives on September 23rd via Monofonus Press. <a title="Stream the album here." href="http://www.stereogum.com/1705640/stream-spray-paint-clean-blood-regular-acid/mp3s/album-stream/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Stream the album here</span>.</a></p>
