Which is why I was psyched to discover that my trip to Seattle would correspond with Wye Oak’s tour, which I had to miss when the band passed through Austin earlier in the month. As I noted in our coverage of The Tontons’ show in Denver last week, photographing and watching bands in foreign spaces is exciting, sort of like the new love phase of a relationship.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-10.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-15850" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-10-150x150.jpg" alt="Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-10" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-10-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-10-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-10-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Neumos, slightly large than Stubb’s indoors, slightly smaller than Mohawk outdoors, and with a more slick atmosphere than either, consists of an almost maze-like entry hallway that opens up into a large room with a balcony positioned above stage right. Like many medium-sized rock clubs, the venue’s lights remained pretty low, and the sound was solid but clearly under theater caliber. The venue did remain much quieter throughout the night than many Austin venues. Although, I’ve heard Stubb’s, Mohawk, and Red 7 all pin-drop quiet for shows in recent memory–Dana Falconberry, The Mountain Goats, and Damien Jurado. Sometimes it’s obvious that the band, their music, and their fans have much to do with a crowd’s vibe. Can any Austinites weigh in on the noise level at Wye Oak’s Parish show? The duo comprised of Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner makes for a simple, clean arrangement that is enhanced by both members’ dexterity. Using synths and effects to fill out the mix, the group creates balanced, tight songs that feel simultaneously airy and earthy while thriving on low-end frequencies. The sold out room pumping their fists and singing along were evidence of how much credibility this band has garnered over the last couple of years.</p> <p><em><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-14.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-15854" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-14-150x150.jpg" alt="Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-14" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-14-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-14-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Wye_Oak_at_Neumos_Seattle-14-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Shriek</em>, their newest effort, has received positive praise, but it was still “Civilian,” the title track from their previous album, played during the encore, that gained the most enthusiastic audience response. The songs from<em> Shriek</em> contain more moody, murky riffs, with Wasner adopting bass (rather than guitar) as the primary instrument for crafting songs. I’ve been hooked on her music since first seeing Wye Oak years ago at SXSW. She has a commanding presence onstage and her songs are powerful in their raw minimalism. Wasner has teamed up with Jon Ehrens of White Life to form the band Dungeonesse, who will release their debut LP on Secretly Canadian on May 14th. Leaving behind her dark, electric folk style, Wasner finds ground to explore greater vocal dexterity and put her excellent voice to use among the soundscape of electric loops and synthetic beats. Dungeonesse has now released two songs from the forthcoming record. You can stream “Shucks” below as well as watch the video for “Drive You Crazy.” Though less star-studded, the nature of the stylistic shifts and collaboration for these artists reminds me of the Postal Service. Though I’ve listened to and greatly enjoyed the music of Dirty Projectors for some time now, I’ll admit they’re a band I have not <em>read about </em>extensively. So, if I repeat the obvious or make claims long since forgone, I hope you’ll forgive me. Primarily, this one: Dirty Projectors are the new Talking Heads. Though that’s a passé phrasing of a sentiment, it’s the most honest way I can describe my feelings about them.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_020.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3117" title="Dirty_Projectors_020" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_020-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_020-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_020-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>With Longstreth at the helm, the band adeptly navigates songs that incorporate intricate syncopation, tightly structured (and experimental) vocal harmonies, emphasis on rhythmic elements, and cryptic but excellent lyricism all in the context of a pop song. The Talking Heads were effective in similar ways and remain no less profound, but Dirty Projectors register as the pendulum swung back with a couple more decades of music from which to draw. Lead singer Longstreth is every bit as captivating as Byrne (with whom Dirty Projectors have worked), though perhaps less theatrical. Sidekick Amber Coffman lends excellent female vocals and musicianship. These two are flanked by a band that fully realizes Longstreth’s avant-garde vision and stays in perfect sync.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_014.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3111" title="Dirty_Projectors_014" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_014-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_014-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Dirty_Projectors_014-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>Playing almost every song from their newest effort, <em>Swing Lo Magellan</em>, Dirty Projectors also played several songs from <em>Bitte Orca</em> as well as the notable “Beautiful Mother” from the Bjork collaboration <em>Mount Wittenberg Orca</em>. The group’s live show made phenomenal use of light (provided by an Austin native whose name I didn’t quite catch), particularly on “Beautiful Mother.” As the vocal melodies waver, then sync, climax, and explode into orchestrated sound, the lighting mirrored this effect, almost as if the band themselves radiated light energy.</p> <p><a href="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Wye_Oak_003.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3123" title="Wye_Oak_003" src="http://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Wye_Oak_003-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" srcset="https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Wye_Oak_003-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.poppressinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Wye_Oak_003-50x50.jpg 50w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" /></a>As a bonus for the evening, the crowd received the treat of Wye Oak as an opener. A group by which I’ve been captivated since the first time I saw them at the Parish several years ago, I’m always excited when they’re in town. As a duo, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack generate an incredible amount of sound. More impressive, is that it’s not just volume and noise. Rather, Wasner carefully employ effects and outstanding guitar skills while Stack handles duties on several instruments simultaneously. Their approach results in a cacophonous barrage of thundering indie rock. The band closed with crowd pleaser and single “Civilian.”</p> <p>Both Wye Oak and Dirty Projectors performed stellar sets, offering proof of their status as vital components of current independent music. With such an outstanding collection of songs as <em>Swing Lo Magellan</em>, I’ve got my fingers crossed that Longstreth and co. will return to Austin in further support of the album before heading
